New Vernacular Studio

Design and fabrication studio specializing in custom Tadelakt furniture

High-Tech meets low-tech

At NV Studio, we combine digital tools with handmade techniques to bring even the most daring design ideas to life.

Digital tools, such as 3D modeling and CNC cutting, allow us to sculpt, shape, and generate a buildable structure that can then be physically assembled.

But technology is only one half of the equation. The human touch remains at the heart of our creative process, giving each piece a unique character and the charm of imperfection that a machine alone cannot produce.

This harmony between the digital and the handmade, ensures that every creation we produce is not just a piece of furniture but a unique piece of art that tells the story of its making.

Tadelakt: Liquid Stone

Tadelakt is an ancient Plastering technique, originating in Morocco and dating back thousands of years.

It starts off as limestone extracted from the Atlas mountains, which is then baked, transformed into a powder, and carefully sifted to produce a very fine lime plaster.

Once applied, the wet plaster is meticulously polished by hand to create a smooth surface and close down the pores.

But the magic happens at the end of the process. When the lime plaster is combined with olive oil soap, the two ingredients produce a chemical reaction that makes the surface waterproof and reveals the layered texture.
In a way, the material returns to its origin, becoming limestone once again.
